Farmer’s Life Saved by AED in Rutland: Real-World Success Story
When Rutland farmer John Martin collapsed from sudden cardiac arrest in May 2022, survival depended on one critical factor: immediate access to a defibrillator.
Working alone in a remote area near Peterborough, John had no time to wait for emergency services. Thankfully, his community had installed a public access AED nearby as part of a regional CPR and defibrillator training initiative. A neighbour used the device within minutes, delivering a life-saving shock that restarted John’s heart.
“Having that defibrillator there and someone who knew how to use it – those moments changed everything,” John later said.
Since then, John has supported rural CPR education, becoming a powerful advocate for AEDs on farms and remote estates. His story reminds us that defibrillators save lives, especially in agricultural settings where help can be far away.
