Tom Lockyer Survives Cardiac Arrest on the Pitch

Tom Lockyer’s cardiac arrest highlights the life-saving power of AEDs and ICDs during medical emergencies on and off the pitch.

Tom Lockyer, captain of Luton Town, collapsed during a Premier League match against Bournemouth in December 2023. His heart stopped for over two minutes, but thanks to immediate CPR and timely AED use, he was successfully resuscitated on the pitch and later discharged after having an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) fitted.

Lockyer publicly credited the paramedics, medical staff, and the life-saving device for saving his life. Now living with an ICD, he advocates for wider access to CPR training and AED deployment, including registering defibrillators with The Circuit for rapid emergency response and raising awareness and preparedness across sporting venues and public spaces.
